Random Facts #3: Star fruit

Carambola, also known as star fruit are a fruit native to Indonesia, the Philippines, and all over Malesia. The tree the fruit grows on is the Averrhoa Carambola, which is part of the Oxalidaceae tree family. The entire fruit is edible but can also be used in cooking and made into juice drinks. The star fruit is commonly grown in tropical areas but has been cultivated in Indian Subcontinents and Southeast Asia for long times. The fruit is about 5 – 15 cm, oval shaped, contains Caramboxin and Oxalic acid. Coaramboxin is a neurotoxin that can cause health risks to someone that might have a kidney disease, kidney stones, or undergoing kidney dialysis treatment. After consumption, a person with the disease could experience hiccups, vomiting, nausea, mental confusion, or even death. Other uses is that since the Star fruit is an acidic sour type of fruit, its juice can be used to clean rusty metals or brass.
